Chef Rodrigo Torres Canela

Made by a Mexican

Real Mexican food

Rodrigo grew up by the sea in Veracruz. That’s why our kitchen is full of fish and seafood – just like on the Gulf coast.

Our tortillas are made of corn – soft, the way they are in Mexico. Our spices and chilies come from Mexico: chipotle, guajillo, habanero, poblano. Each has its own flavour, not just heat – one is smoky, another sweet, another fruity.

The kitchen is open. You can watch Rodrigo cook and ask him anything – in English or Spanish.

First time at Agave? Three things to know

Tacos here are soft

Not a hard shell from a supermarket shelf. A soft corn tortilla that bends in your hand. You eat it with your fingers – that’s how it’s done.

You choose how spicy

Sauces come in separate small bowls – add as much as you like. Many dishes can be ordered mild, medium or hot. Most of the menu can be eaten with no heat at all.

The whole menu, all day

There’s no separate lunch menu. From 12.00, everything on the menu is available. Only three dishes take about 20 minutes: Pescado Jarocho, Pollo Borracho and Alambre.

Finding us

Right on the Town Hall Square

Agave is at Rotušės a. 3, Kaunas Old Town. Look for the round sign with the agave logo and the Mexican flag above the door. The restaurant is in a historic brick-vaulted cellar, down a flight of stairs.

From May to early October there’s also a terrace on the square. Terrace tables can’t be booked – reservations are always inside. If there’s a free table outside when you arrive, you’re welcome to sit there.

Step-free access. Because of the old cellar stairs, our dining rooms are unfortunately not accessible by wheelchair. In summer, while the terrace is open, we’ll be happy to welcome you outside – just call us before you come, and we’ll do our best to keep a table free for you.

Payment: cash or card – whichever suits you.
Tips can be left in cash or by card via GlobalTips – just scan the QR code on the GlobalTips card. Bank card, Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted.
